About Us

Julie Frew lives in Norwich, VT and joined The VTones in 2022.  Originally from the Washington, DC area, Julie grew up singing in school and church choirs and performing in musicals before joining the Kenyon College Chamber Singers as an undergraduate.  After college, she sang with a cappella group Treble in New York City for several years before relocating to the Upper Valley for medical school.  A psychiatrist by day, Julie also enjoys acting and dancing and has performed locally with the Parish Players, NCCT, We The People Theatre, Revels North, Opera North, and White River Ballet Academy.

Becky Bailey has sung all her life in church, family car trips, musical shows, choruses of every ilk (currently: Counterpoint), jazz combos, and big bands, and has no intention of stopping. She works for the nonprofit Vital Communities and she and her mate live in the woods of Strafford.

Danae Nafziger Carlson lives in Quechee, Vermont with her husband and two sons. She recently completed her master’s degree in nursing education and works as a registered nurse at the Student Health Center at Dartmouth College. Danae began singing and studying piano at the age of 6. Growing up, she sang with various choral groups and studied with private vocal coaches. In college, she continued to study piano and sang with the Concert Choir and prestigious Chamber Choir at Colorado State University-Pueblo. Danae has performed with semi-professional theatre companies including the Musical Notes in Pueblo, CO and Performance Now Theatre Company in Denver, CO. After college, Danae had the opportunity to take a job as a performer at the Walt Disney Company in Orlando, FL. Danae is a member of Sweet Adelines, an international women’s barbershop organization; and enjoys singing women’s barbershop with the Valley Chords in White River Junction. In addition to vocal music, Danae spent much of her time studying classical ballet. She continues to dance with the adult ensemble at White River Ballet Academy in White River Junction, Vermont. This summer she will make her debut as a soloist in The Farm to Ballet Project with Ballet Vermont. Danae sings Alto 1 with the VTones. She is so grateful to have the opportunity to create beautiful a cappella music with this group!

Katie loves to sing, and you can hear her doing it almost anywhere…while doing dishes, hiking in the woods, waking up her kids, during her day job as a Music Together teacher at the Upper Valley Music Center, on community and professional theater stages, and right here with the VTones! Despite all that singing, her formal training is actually in mediation and conflict resolution, but she fell into childhood music education by accident about 20 years ago while leading a HopStop event and hasn’t looked back. When not teaching, she wrangles a household of three boys whose activities keep her very busy. It’s been a great challenge and a ton of fun to return to a cappella singing with this talented and caring group of performers.

Archie's recollection of his first influence of music came from a cartridge otherwise known as a cassette tape. If his memory serves him right, he would say he was a toddler when he had first heard recorded songs from the 70's and 80's done by his dad while working abroad. Years later, he had nourished that gift of music by singing at church and multiple singing groups. He is actively involved with the Barbershop Harmony Society since 2008. He is the Tenor/Baritone of prominent groups in the Upper Valley - Voxstars, VTones, North County Chordsmen to name a few. He is also part of two evolving quartets - Bated Breath (a barbershop mixed quartet) and the Marksmen (an all male doowop group). He is an accomplished soloist and his style was influenced by singers like Josh Groban, James Ingram and Gary Valenciano .He speaks 3 languages-Tagalog, English and Karaoke. Yes!He was born and raised in the Philippines - one of the premier karaoke capitals of Asia. He came to the US in 2006 for work. His wife and 2 beautiful daughters are also musically adept. If he is not singing the Ave Maria, dueting The Prayer with his wife and daughters, or ringing harmonies with his a cappella groups…he uses his 20 yrs of nursing experience to take care of patients in Dartmouth Health.Archie is a Cardiac Nurse by day (he might use his gift of music to soothe pains and weariness of patients, on occasion) but after a busy day at work, he creates time for melodies and harmonies that fill the Upper Valley Community.

After a childhood of globetrotting adventure, Stephen Dunn found himself an adult (a surprise in itself) with an appropriately broad taste in music. Equally a devotee of Heavy Metal, Handel, Estonian folk and everything in between, Stephen has been singing in vocal ensembles off and on since high school. Since joining the VTones in 2020, he has relished the journey down the road of close harmony singing with, as far as he is concerned, seven of the best amateur singers to be found in the Upper Valley. While his home base may be singing the big works of centuries past, he is happily diving headfirst into the diverse soundscape of pop and jazz a cappella.

Stephen lives in Hartford with his wife Molly and dog Banner where he works as a carpenter (before you ask, he is overbooked). When not working or singing, he enjoys trail running and date nights at home with Thai takeout and retro video games with Molly. He also sings with the Handel Society at Dartmouth, Barbershop Quartet Grade A Fancy and The North Country Chordsmen.

Da-Shih Hu is a staff psychiatrist at the Dartmouth College Health Service, having previously been a staff psychiatrist at Dartmouth Hitchcock for over 20 years.

He has been involved in music in the Upper Valley in multiple ways, including singing with various groups including Counterpoint, the Bel Canto Chamber Singers, and the Charades (the Upper Valley’s longest-lasting a cappella doo-wop quartet), performing onstage including as Sweeney in Sweeney Todd and Ko-Ko in The Mikado, and playing woodwinds, keyboard, and strings for dozens of pit orchestras including for Northern Stage, North Country Community Theatre, and area schools.

As co-editor of his medical school yearbook, he included the Navajo Beauty Way as a closing -- “In beauty it is finished.

Pat has been singing a cappella music as a baritone most of his adult life.  In the 1990’s, he began singing in the barbershop style in New Jersey and with Voices of Gotham before switching to groups singing a wider repertoire.  He led No Strings A Cappella for five years.  Since  moving to Vermont in 2017, Pat has been a member of the Thetford Chamber Singers and The Dartmouth Gospel Choir.  In 2019, he and Becky Bailey founded The VTones.  In addition to singing baritone, Pat also arranges songs for the group.

Pat enjoys singing all types of music but has a special love of jazz.  He lives in Quechee with his wife Marsha and two feisty parakeets.
